A few days ago I decided that I wanted to finally finish the Malediction trilogy, starting with a reread of book one. Stolen Songbird was just as captivating and enchanting as I remembered, so I started Hidden Huntress immediately so I could try and hold on to the overall excitement for the series.
I remember putting Hidden Huntress aside the first time because the plot was taking too long to ramp up. Second time around, I was easily able to get past the first couple boring chapters and dive into the story. And even though I had already figured out one of the biggest reveals by the end of the Hidden Huntress, I really enjoyed the smaller reveals and the way the story twisted and turned.
The reason I had to give Hidden Huntress 3 stars is because it made me despise Tristan. He was often moody and broody in Stolen Songbird, but I gave him passes for his indifference and poor decisions because he was working through issues, and at times, understandably needed to appear indifferent for the protection of others.
In Hidden Huntress his crappy behavior towards his friends, subjects, and especially Cecile, really rubbed me the wrong way. There’s one particular thing he says to Cecile towards the last quarter of the book that made me want to punch him in the face. In my opinion, Cecile deserves better. Yes, she has also made some bad decisions, some that were a little selfish, but she’s always been the more compassionate, considerate, and understanding of the two story leads. She has a much better understanding of right and wrong and I definitely preferred her POV chapters in Hidden Huntress over Tristan’s.
Also, and especially, I’m so sick of Tristan still withholding important information from Cecile. ⅔ of the way through the trilogy and Tristan still doesn’t trust her enough, or doesn’t believe that she needs to know xyz. The distance between them both physically and emotionally in Hidden Huntress, and the constant lack of trust on Tristan’s part, made it really hard for me to root for them as a couple.
At this point I’m not really sure if I’ll finish the last book in the trilogy. I’m curious to see how the story wraps up because the world is really interesting and different from other books I’ve read. But I’m so turned off by Tristan at this point, and since he’s 1 of the 2 main characters, there’s bound to be a lot of him in the last book. At this point in time, I need a break from his stupid beautiful face.
