Lick (Stage Dive #1) by Kylie Scott

I devoured Lick in just one sitting which I’m sure may come as a surprise given that I’m only rating the book 2.5 stars.

Lick is my first accidentally-got-married story. I happened across it while browsing the Kindle store, and after reading the first chapter that was pasted in the synopsis, I felt immediately compelled to buy the book.

The book starts with Evelyn waking up with a massive hangover in the bathroom of her Vegas motel room. Her BFF Lauren is nowhere in sight, but a very attractive, attentive, sweet and complete mystery man is. Evelyn is shocked when she realizes she doesn’t remember a damn thing from the night before, including David (the sweet mystery guy) she married.

I was pretty disappointed that this book didn’t have dual POV. After reading the first chapter, what I really wanted was to get inside the head of David. Evelyn was super drunk and not completely herself when she got married in Vegas — David however – was. I wanted desperately to know why some heartthrob rocker would marry a girl he had known for barely a few hours and why he was so upset when Evelyn didn’t remember their night together.

Wanting to know about David’s past, and seeing how the relationship between David and Evelyn would develop is what kept me glued to the pages. I liked Evelyn’s narration of the story, but her personality sometimes left a lot to be desired. She could be very cold and unaffected at times and it also drove me nuts how often she apologized and immediately agreed with things.

What I especially didn’t care for was the majority of dialogue between Evelyn and David. It just felt incredibly wooden. Too often things would be heating up or getting really sweet between the two MCs and then an exchange of blah dialogue would happen and completely ruin the moment. I also personally didn’t like that often when Evelyn and David were fighting, instead of talking, they just had angry sex. It happened a few times and just really rubbed me wrong (it might just be a pet peeve of mine).

I know that the next book in this series will be about Mal, who I loved from the beginning, but I don’t think I’ll be reading it or any of the other books. I was kind of let down by this one and don’t feel too inclined to give the series another chance.

Happily Letter After by Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward

This is one of the best books I’ve read in months! I laughed, cried, smiled like a loon, and just really had a good time reading it. Like others have stated in reviews I’ve seen, there’s a bit of an out-there/telenovela plot twist ¾ the way through which made this book feel a little too much like a cheesy hallmark film, but regardless I really loved the story. Sadie was down-to-earth, kind, and funny as hell. She was extremely likable. Sebastian was sexy, and also kinda funny/dorky which made me like him even more. I really loved the scenes with him and his daughter. They were funny and so sweet. This is actually my first single father book but definitely not my last!! The Pack (The Pack #1) by Kristin Coley

This is actually my second time reading this book. I originally read it back in 2018. I couldn’t remember much, just that it had a couple little nitpicks, but overall, was really enjoyable. The Pack was just as good the second time around. I really love Kristin Coley’s take on Wolf Shifters – the myth, pack dynamic, etc. Some bits I’ve read about before, and others, wholly unique. Too often, shifter books that feature a type of “mate bond” have the main characters falling in love immediately. I really dislike insta-love, so those types of books I tend to DNF right away. Even though it’s pretty clear early on that there’s something strange happening between Jess and Dominic, this book doesn’t throw them together right away. It takes a while before Jess doesn’t just see Dominic as an ass, and Dominic starts to open up and communicate with Jess. And then, even when Jess starts to figure out what’s going on in her new hometown, she doesn’t just leap into it. She’s got more on her mind, bes...

Just One Year by Penelope Ward

This book wasn’t perfect. It had a couple small plot points that were hastily slapped together, and some that seemed a bit far-fetched. But overall, it was a swoony, romantic, emotional roller coaster read, that I’m so glad I was able to discover. It made me chuckle out loud and tear up. It really pulled the emotion from me, throughout. I especially loved our main characters, and how they connected over different childhood traumas. They started out indifferent (well, mainly the fmc), became best friends (super sweet moments), and then became lovers ( ). I was entirely invested in these two, the moment they met, and knew I’d be finishing the book quickly.
